What Are the Requirements for PWA Icons?
To satisfy Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge installability criteria, a Progressive Web App must register a Web App Manifest referencing at least two standard icons:
- 192×192 pixels: Displayed on the Android application home screen grid and task switcher.
- 512×512 pixels: Used as the full-screen splash screen launcher asset while your PWA loads into memory.
Understanding Maskable Icons and the Safe Zone
Android features dynamic device launcher shapes (including circles, squircles, teardrops, and rounded rectangles). A maskable icon ensures your graphic adapts to any OEM device mask without showing unsightly white borders.
When designing maskable icons, all critical artwork must remain within the central 80% safe-zone circle (radius = 40% of the canvas size), leaving a 10% outer padding margin to absorb shape crops.
